What is a utility anyway?
When you think about it this way, a utility is a tool.
There are literally thousands and thousands of software utility, programs
on the market from the simple to the more difficult.
Utilities are tools just as a shovel can dig a ditch a software utility can also perform a function that makes your work easier, that is the basis for most software tools and utilities, they were born out of a necessity to get more work done in less time using automation.
This can be both good and bad, good as long as the tool works the way you expect it to work, bad if something happens that you do not expect to happen, sometimes this can be the case with any tool including a shovel. How effective a tool is depends on how its designed, for example if you need to rake leaves in your yard, you would want a tool that is designed to separate the leaves from the grass with as little work as possible, one of the things that you often find in a rake is that the weakest point is often between the implement and the handle.
This is where the most force is sustained when it is being used. However, for some reason which is beyond this writers imagination, apparently no such tool exists that will not tear up after a few hours use, this can be compared in design and construction, when a designer constructs a tool and does not test it out you can find out the hard way that particular tool may not work the way you hoped it would work. Software can be the same way, this is why it is so important to test out every tool that you create so that you know it will not tear up in an hour of use.
Tools are what you can use to do your job easier.
If you were going to dig a ditch, 100 feet long, you would not just try to do it by hand, unless you have a strong back and a lot of time on your hands.
What you would do would be to find a tool that could do the work for you, so that you can take the time to do the really important things in life.
